No Traffic During the Fall and Winter

We’ve all experienced it. You’re driving into town, ready for a day of fun in the sun, only to run into a wave of taillights. Fall in Love with our “Second Season”

Ahhhh, the air is a bit crisper, the sunsets more dramatic – there’s really nothing like experiencing Fall at the beach. I should begin by letting you know that we are completely biased. We could not love where we live more, and we love everything about this time of year, which we fondly dub the “Second Season”. After the majority of vacationers have packed up and headed home, our Island takes on an entirely different atmosphere.

Why visit this time of year? So glad you asked!

  • TWO WORDS. NO. TRAFFIC. ~ Summer at the beach is notorious for its traffic – we are a one-highway Island after all. While all of that time in the car is always worth it once you get here, it can also be exhausting and frustrating. But this time of year? Oh, it’s fabulous – no traffic!
  • COOLER WEATHER ~ No more 95 degree days! While Summer is the perfect time to get your Vitamin D, long days in the harsh heat aren’t always fun. Fall is the perfect time to take long hikes on Assateague, or wander on the beach shell-combing for hours. Our Wild Ponies seem to enjoy the cooler temps, as well, and are seen more frequently once the crowds die down.

  • SUNSETS & CAMPFIRES ~ Did you know that you can sit on the beach at Assateague National Seashore and watch the sunset over the Chincoteague Bay at the same time? And nothing is more amazing than a Fall campfire on the beach as you take this in.

  • YOU NEED THIS ~ If you didn’t take your usual Summer getaway due to the craziness in our world right now, you really need to do yourself a favor and take that break. Just returning from a vacation ourselves, I can honestly say it is life-changing. Step outside the day to day and remind yourself how amazing our world really is. Bring the kids Trick or Treating on Main Street, or, grab those you love and spend Thanksgiving with a water view. Just step outside the ordinary…..

  • SAVE SOME DOUGH ~ As if the above reasons weren’t enough, there’s also the added benefit that off season vacations simply cost less. Everything costs less in the off-season – it’s like the coupon version of vacation. And who doesn’t love coupons?

Must Dos while you’re here

  • Hike the trails and search for Wild Ponies at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge – the beauty is astonishing!
  • Take a long walk on the Beach at Assateague National Seashore – the shelling is awesome this time of year!
  • Enjoy some Fresh Local Seafood at Bill’s Prime Steak & Seafood or The Village – no waiting this time of year!
  • Enjoy a Classic Movie at the Island Theatre for only $5! Beautifully restored, they offer classic and family films as well as concerts and plays!

And be sure to mark your calendar for some of our favorite Winter Events including our Annual Tree Lighting and our Old Fashioned Christmas Parade! See your favorite little Beach Town come to life over the holidays – there’s nothing like a Christmas by the Sea!
